Oh my God! OMG! How often do we hear those phrases? Or even the mildly modified versions such as Oh my gosh, or oh my goodness? If you’re like me, then it’s quite often. The phrases in and of themselves aren’t particularly wrong. But what is the context in which they’re being used? Are you proclaiming that your God is amazing, wonderful, gracious, merciful, sovereign, loving, powerful……or are you proclaiming disgust at something?
We’re told multiple times in the Bible not to use His name in vain and warned of the seriousness of blasphemy. It’s not something to be taken lightly, and unfortunately all too often it is.
I’m not calling out anyone in particular, but rather the whole of people that use His name in inappropriate ways and thus blaspheming my God, my Lord. I’m inclined to feel that people should know this already but fear that some may not know. I fear even more that maybe some of them do know but don’t care. Regardless, what they need to know is that it is sin that is Biblically condemned!
To the lost sinners and the professing Christians alike, please do not use our Creator’s, our Lord’s name as profanity.
