Advent Day 7: God’s Eternal Faithfulness

Faithfulness

Welcome to Day 7 of Advent, a season of anticipation and reflection leading up to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Today, we look at Psalms 89:1-4, a passage that beautifully encapsulates the enduring faithfulness and promises of God.

Psalms 89:1-4 (NIV) reads:

“I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;

with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known

through all generations.

I will declare that your love stands firm forever,

that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

You said, ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen one,

I have sworn to David my servant:

‘I will establish your line forever

and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

In these verses, the psalmist expresses a declaration of praise and recognition of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. It’s a testament to God’s enduring commitment not only to David but to all generations. This passage echoes the unwavering promises of God to His people.

The psalmist’s intention to sing of God’s love forever signifies a deep-seated gratitude and an understanding of the unchanging nature of God’s character. And the proclamation of God’s faithfulness throughout all generations emphasizes the continuous nature of His love—a love that transcends time, circumstance, and human understanding.

The covenant made with David, a promise of an eternal lineage and an unshakeable throne, is symbolic of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word. Through this covenant, God revealed His commitment to His people. And it extends far beyond one generation, echoing through history. Then culminating in the fulfillment of His promise through Jesus Christ.

Advent serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. In sending His son, God fulfilled the covenant promised to David by establishing an everlasting kingdom through the Messiah. And Jesus’ birth represents the culmination of God’s promise—a Savior born to bring salvation and eternal life to all who believe.

As we journey through this Advent season, let’s reflect on the unwavering faithfulness of God. Let’s take a moment to ponder the promises He has fulfilled and the hope He offers through His unchanging love. Let’s continue our full of anticipation and thankfulness, embracing the promise of God’s everlasting faithfulness and eagerly waiting His return!

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
    therefore I will wait for him.”
